Chapel Hill developed as a town to support the University of North Carolina, arguably the oldest public university in the country. The town is built around it’s main thoroughfare, Franklin Street. Named for Benjamin Franklin has many fine historic residences as well as the university and numerous shops, restaurants and bars. The town was founded in 1819 but not charted until 1851.
